Finally a calm day. We ventured out 35+ mi off Stump Pass to some numbers that had produced in the past. The winds were calm making drifting a good option. Using live and cut bait as well as a buck tail jig with an orange tail we were able to limit out on red grouper in about 2 hours., The biggest fish, a 32" red grouper, was caught on the jig.
LOCATION: 47 mi out of Stump Pass
CATCH: Lane snapper (4), red grouper (6)
STORY: Due to high temperatures we headed to deeper water for red grouper. Old numbers produced some nice sized grouper. We tried both dead bait and artifical lures. The most effective approach was jigging a buck tail jig with an orange curley attached bounced off the bottom. After limiting out on grouper we anchored and downsized the tackle for snapper. The result was a few nice lane snapper.
